96.4 Eagle4th June 2010 – Greg Ward, CEO of the Revive-Group and former Operations Director of Heathrow, talks to Eagle Radio about the effects of the continued strike action of the BA Cabin Crew.

Q. How do you think Heathrow Airport is coping with the strike action?

A. The Heathrow management team and staff are very experienced in dealing with complex situations, so they will be treating this crisis in the same professional manner.

The BAA team will be focused on all the passengers that are flying to make sure they have a seamless journey and a great customer experience.

The Airside team are the guys who have the difficult job of balancing the Aircraft movements, Stand allocation and the overall flow rate of the Airport.

Obviously this is made harder due to the amount of BA Aircraft parked due to the strike, which the Airside teams need to find space within an operation, which is already at 98% capacity.

However studying the facts on how the operation is running the BAA management and staff are doing a tremendous job.

Q. What is your view on BA's performance through this period?

A. Well the facts speak for them self. The BA team have managed to fly 80% long hauls and 60 - 70% of short hauls, which is very impressive when you think about what they are dealing with. Also we should understand that BA's operation is unaffected in the rest of their Airport operations, the strike is effecting Heathrow alone.

Q. Why is that?

A. From my understanding all the BA's crews who operate from the other Airports already work to the Terms and Conditions that the BA Management teams are asking for.

Q. Will BA give into the strike?

A. That is a difficult question to answer without knowing all the facts, however the Airline needed to do something to become competitive for their customers and the overall survival of the airline in a very difficult economic climate.

Q. What in your opinion is the other effect of the strike?

A. Well the obvious effect on the Airline itself is massive, with regard to the loss of revenue and the effect it is having on their reputation, which will take years to get back on track.

The bit that people miss and maybe the guys that are taking part in the strike have possibly overlooked is the bigger picture when the strikes finish. The knock on effect will go on for years to many more businesses in our local economy who rely on Heathrow Airport with regard to impact and loss of revenue.
